Hopkins District Library Board Meeting Minutes

April 8, 2013

Present: Suzanne Antvelink, Natalie Bazan, Karon Dunifin, Mimi Gabriel, Anita Kerber, David Klink, Chris Navis, Barbara Wrobleski

Absent: Lynn Francis

1.      Meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM.

2.      Roll Call.

3.      Approval of Agenda

Approved.

4.      Approval of Minutes

Approved.

5.      Treasurer’s Report

Reviewed report.

Natalie will rewrite report, taking grant money out and presenting separately.

Report approved as written.

6.      Correspondence

None.

7.      Public Comment

None.

8.      Director’s Report

·         Programs

o   Sticks & Strings group meeting 3rd Monday of the month.

o   Book club meeting regularly.

o   Coups for Troops (coupon clippers) meeting regularly.

o   April Fool’s Day prank.

o   Old school games.

o   Preschool group – superhero reads.

o   Petition signing – fracking.

o   Seeds class April 13.

o   Tree plaque painting.

o   Friends group meeting April 22.

o   World book night April 23.

·         Publicity

o   Up to 95 “likes” on Facebook.

o   Globe articles.

o   School newsletter.

o   Posters around town.

·         Meetings, workshops, etc.

o   Advisory Council Meeting (LLC).

o   Group A&B library’s meeting

·         Building Issues

o   Replacement door purchased, needs installing.

o   Electricity upgrade – waiting for Consumers to finish the paperwork for the grant.

·         Library Closings

o   Good Friday & Easter (March 29 & 30).

·         Volunteers

o   22 people have signed up for the Friends of the Library group – next meeting April 22nd.

o   Donations of books still arriving.

·         Lakeland, State, other library news

o   none.

·         Patron comments and suggestions

o   Book suggestions.

o   Looking for program ideas (guy programs).

·         Other

o   Reviewed quote of $5961.99 from Marcus Allen for purchase of new desktops, laptop, firewall, annual backup, and other improvements to be paid for with grant money.

o   SRC planned and have received donations, but need volunteers.

o   Board approved hiring of temporary assistant, not to exceed $500, to help out for SRC this summer.

o   Board agreed to allow Natalie to purchase 2 or 3 used Nook/Kindle readers to be pre-loaded with library or public domain books and be available for loan through library.

o   Barb Bennet will be organizing Farmer’s Market beginning May 11.

o   Lakeland website hosting has been having difficulties.  Natalie is researching purchase of our own domain.

o   Received NRA grant to be used for self-defense class for travelers, graduating seniors, others, and a Hunter’s Safety class.  Classes will be taught by current Allegan police officer.

o   HDL will have a table at 2014 Allegan County Children’s Carnival on June 14.  About 800 kids are expected.

o   Natalie will be on vacation from April 23 through May 1.

9.      Old Business

·         Discussed library needs.

o   Kitchenette – including stove and refrigerator.

o   Projection area – convenient location to view movies or present powerpoints.

o   Tutoring nook – one or two areas to be used for quiet study or tutoring.

o   Discussed use of library floor space currently being used by township.

o   Natalie will explore options for library renovation consultants.

·         Discussed expansion of Village/Township building proposed at last month’s meeting.

o   Loss of parking spaces between buildings.

o   Create potential fire hazard by boxing in laundromat & storage building.

o   Not ascetically appealing.

·         Board voted unanimously not to allow any additional building to be constructed on library property.

10.  New Business

·         Voted to approve technology quote submitted by Marcus Allen.

12.  Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM.

Next meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 14th at 7:00 PM.
